Harry Potter Homeschooling

Well our Harry Potter week was a hit!  In fact we are still finishing up some projects because he wanted to do more Harry Potter themed activities.  Last year we made our wands and this year we got to use them!  We had classes ranging from Defense Against the Dark Arts to Care of Magical Creatures.  It was an incredible week, but a lot of work for me.  There was a lot of prep time for this one short week, but I would do it again since the Hellion enjoyed it so much.

Daily Plan

Our weekly classes

It started off with preparing his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts.  I copied the letter from the book and then picked a font I thought looked magical.  I picked a paper that looked older and more like parchment and I also trimmed the edges.  Some people dye their letters with coffee or tea for a stained, old-timey look.  I decided not to go quite that far.

The first thing we did for the week was get sorted into classes.  The Hellion was sorted into Gryffindor and he created a house crest!

Charms Class

I had used Harry Potter Wikia and Scholastic’s HP Glossary to find all the spells that I wanted the Hellion to learn while in school.  I then found which book they were originally mentioned in and broke them down into a list by year at Hogwarts.  So our first day the Hellion learned all his year 1 & 2 spells.  He also did a crossword puzzle that I made for each list.  This helped reinforce the spells.  He copied them into his wizarding notebook as well.

Care of Magical Creatures

We bought the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and used it as a main resource book.  We read through it and then the Hellion picked one creature to do a project on.  He decided on a Basilisk.  He did some research and then put together a powerpoint presentation and shared it with some fellow homeschoolers.

Arithmancy

We spent the week learning about map-making and ended it with a map of the first floor of Hogwarts.  He has actually decided to expand on that and is creating the entire Hogwarts castle and grounds on Minecraft.  I will be posting about that separately.

Potions

We did three “potions” classes for HP week and they were all a success!  Our first potion was invisible ink, then exploding soap, and finally burning basilisk skin.  I didn’t get pictures of these classes because I was too busy doing them with them!  I did get a picture of the final product of our exploding soap.

History of Magic

We made a character poster for this class.  Well, we are making one.  It isn’t finished yet, but I will post a picture when we finish it.  The Hellion picked Hagrid to do his poster on and his four characteristics were Strong, Tall, Loyal, and Friendly.  We found passages, that fit these characteristics, as we read HP and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Defense Against the Dark Arts

For this class we both played on Pottermore and had wizarding duels against other Hogwarts houses.  This was more of a fun break from all the actual work going on but we both enjoyed it.

On Friday the Hellion took his Charms O.W.L. and passed with flying colors.  He also filled out a HP timeline.  All in all it was a great week!
