So my Hellion, my little boy, is turning 8 today! I can’t believe it. It just doesn’t seem possible that he is this old already. He has been through so much already and been such a trooper through all of it.
His first surgery was at 4 months old. He was born with Craniosynostosis and had to have surgery on his skull so it would grow correctly. He had a football shaped head up to that point. He had an amazing doctor at Shands and the staff there rocked. The night nurse in the PICU had the same name as the Hellion and was awesome for putting up with me all night. He spent the next year wearing a helmet while his head was re-shaped. This is where he got the tendency to run head first into everything. It didn’t hurt with the helmet on, lol.
He has finally, this past summer, been 100% cleared. He never has to go back and get his head checked again! It is a wonderful thing and I am so grateful. No more MRI’s or CT’s and no more doctors poking at his head! No more long drives to get him checked out either! YAY! This past year he managed to break his elbow and then a couple of months later break his nose.
The nose ended up requiring surgery. I’ll bet you can guess how he broke his nose. Did you guess a trampoline? Ding, ding, ding, you are correct. He got bounced by another kid, did a backflip (kicked himself in the nose in the process) and landed nose down on the metal edge. First thing the Hellion said to me when he got his cast off his nose, “When can I get back on a trampoline?” Not until you are old enough to pay your own medical bills kiddo! With all of that, he is still one of the sweetest, funniest, greatest kids on the face of this planet. He is living life at warp speed and absolutely loving it! So Happy Birthday to my Hellion! May next year be filled with fewer trips to the ER and more trips to the park!
We celebrated his birthday with the family on Friday! He got some pretty kick butt gifts and his Gigi made his favorite dinner, Hamburger Heaven! He was very excited about all of it. He even got to bring his best friend down for the weekend.
Saturday we went to the beach to celebrate his twin cousin’s birthday (which is actually the same day as his). They all had a blast playing in the water and finding hermit crabs and other sea critters.
Later today we are going to the Aquarium to do a Behind the Scenes tour. I can’t wait and neither can the boys! All in all, it has already been a great birthday for him and for me.
