The Nile Almost Failed

We use Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times for our History lessons.  I truly love this book mostly because it has some AWESOME activities that go along with the lessons.  Hellion loves the crafts and activities as well (and the fact that I read it to him).  So one of our first activities sounded incredibly easy.  Now you have to know I am about as crafty as a rock (not the pretty ones with all the colors, just a plain grey rock).  This book has step-by-step instructions, how could we fail?  Our job is to make the Nile River Valley and then flood it and see what happens.  We get all the materials and put in the soil, then comes the fun part, making a river out of aluminum foil.

So we make our river, lay down the grass seed and then the Hellion floods our river valley, except the water just kind of pooled in the “delta” we had created at one end, the sides of the river didn’t get any water.  So we try to fix the leak in the river so the water stays in the foil river we have created for it and then flood it again.  By the time we got done flooding and fixing, the whole thing looked like a muddy, soupy mess (plus our mountains had sunk).

I figured we would let it ride for a week and see if anything happened.  I totally thought this experiment was a wash!  So we left it alone.  We flooded it one more time about a week later and now…

It worked!  We got it right!  Hellion thinks this is one of the coolest things we have done so far, though our actual failed experiment I think tops this.

I love how fast the grass grew, considering it was in an aluminium tray. Visual projects are the best!

    Looking good, girlfriend! LOL
